| Kostroma-Yaroslavl | |
|
Tour program: |
|
| Friday | |
| Friday evening we depart from Moscow to Kostroma. | |
| Saturday | |
| Breakfast on board. This morning finds us the banks of the
Volga at Kostroma, closed to foreigners until recently. Its city center
was built in the 18th century and remains intact. Its classic design and
cobblestone streets have made it a favorite of film-makers portraying
scenes of Old Russia. We visit the splendid Ipatievsky Monastery and the gold-domed Trinity Cathedral. The Monastery played a key role in Russian history when Mikhail Romanov left here to be crowned tsar, founding the Romanov dynasty. In the nearby Archbishop's house is a little-known, very affecting exhibition with original photographs and personal objects that provide an intimate glimpse at the lives of the last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family. Dinner in the city. Russian folk band concert. We enjoy a cruise on the Volga and dinner in the city's restaurant before continuing on our train to Yaroslavl. |

| Sunday | |
| After breakfast we spend the day in Yaroslavl, beautifully
situated at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl rivers. Founded in
1010 by Prince Yaroslavl the Wise, Yaroslavl - often called the
"Russian Florence" - is a treasure house of historic
monuments. At the busting main square is the Church of St.Elijah, with
striking frescoes and paintings. We will also visit the Transfiguration
Monastery, with a fine icon collection. At noon we board on train and
return to Moscow. Arrival in Moscow about 5 p.m.
